Ear Tubes Are Overused in Children - Newsmax

Image
Otitis media is a disease of the middle ear that involves an inflammation of the ear’s lining. Many parents are familiar with otitis media, as the condition is frequently diagnosed in childhood (an ear infection). It can occur acutely or develop into a chronic condition, and there are many different bacteria associated with otitis media. When children have repeated episodes of otitis media, doctors will often recommend implantation of tympanostomy tubes — cylinders that are surgically inserted into the eardrum to provide ventilation and prevent buildup of fluids. Biofilms — conglomerations of microorganisms that are a major cause of infections — have been shown to occur in the inner surface of tympanostomy tubes. Researchers have observed biofilm formation on every tympanostomy tube inserted into the ear of guinea pigs. To put it bluntly, tympanostomy tubes are overused. Doctors are much too quick to recommend surgical implantation of a tube instead of searching for the underlyin

Brett Burstein A quarter of children aged younger than 2 years with bronchiolitis who visited U.S. EDs between 2007 and 2015 received antibiotics, even though 70% of those patients had no bacterial coinfection, according to study results published in the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society . “Bronchiolitis is a viral infection that does not respond to or require antibiotic treatment, and guidelines of the AAP, first published in 2006 and reiterated in 2014 , recommend against the use of antibiotics for this illness,” Brett Burstein, MD, Ph D , MPH, FRCPC, FAAP, told Infectious Diseases in Children . “Also, since 2013, reducing antibiotic prescribing for viral respiratory illness, including bronchiolitis, has become the top priority of the AAP’s Choosing Wisely national campaign. Viral pathogen presence changes during course of acute sinusitis symptoms - Healio

Image
Upper respiratory infections, or URIs, are more common among children who develop acute sinusitis, according to research published in Clinical Infectious Diseases . Although respiratory syncytial virus was the most common cause of URI among children with sinusitis, 30% of patients with the condition had a new viral pathogen present in samples collected on the 10th day of symptoms, researchers said. The findings suggest that some children thought to have sinusitis are instead experiencing sequential viral infections, according to Gregory P. DeMuri, MD, professor of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and colleagues. The researchers wrote that viral upper respiratory infections may cause inflammation of mucosal membranes in the nose and nasopharynx. This can cause the sinus ostia to become obstructed and allow bacteria to grow in the nasopharynx and cause complications like acute sinusitis and acute otitis media , accordi

Jesse Papenburg, M.D., from McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of emergency department data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2007 to 2015. The researchers identified 59,921 unweighted emergency department visits by pediatric patients during 2007 to 2015; of these, 1.1 percent met the inclusion criteria, representing an estimated 2.92 million emergency department visits for bronchiolitis in children aged <2 years. Overall, 89.7 percent of all visits were emergency department discharges. In
