OtoNexus raises $4.4 million for ear infection detection technology - Medical Design & Outsourcing

OtoNexus (Seattle) has raised more than $4.4 million as it continues to develop its ultrasound medical device technology to diagnose middle ear infections, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Form D filed this month. OtoNexus  has been seeking a nearly $8.3 million from the money-raise. It previously raised $7.8 million in 2017 . Funders and supporters listed on OtoNexus’ website include the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, Future in Review, AdvaMed and the Philadelphia Pediatric Medical Device Consortium. HealthDay News — Most children younger than 2 years with bronchiolitis seen in US emergency departments and prescribed antibiotics have no documented bacterial coinfection, according to a study published online January 17 in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society . Jesse Papenburg, MD, from McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of emergency department data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2007 to 2015. The study population included all children aged <2 years with a discharge diagnosis of bronchiolitis. The researchers identified 59,921 unweighted emergency department visits by pediatric patients during 2007 to 2015; of these, 1.1% met the inclusion criteria, representing an estimated 2.92 million emergency department visits for bronchiolitis in children aged <2 years. Almost one quarter (23.2%) of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in the United States are inappropriate, according to an analysis of new diagnosis codes and insurance claims data from 19.2 million patients. "This study provides the most recent and comprehensive estimates of outpatient antibiotic appropriateness in the US privately insured population to date. Our results show the scale of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing at both the prescription and population levels," the researchers write.
