The Best Way To Get Rid Of That Painful Pimple In Your Ear, According To Derms

What's worse than a new pimple forming? Trying to get rid of it, of course. Those pesky, painful pus-filled bumps always seem to appear in the most inconvenient places—on your face, your back, and yes, sometimes even in your ear.

A pimple in your ear may seem like an unusual spot, but blemishes can form just about anywhere there's skin. The causes of acne range from excess oil on the skin, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, inflammation, hormonal balance, diet and even stress—and your ears are fair game when it comes to new pimples.

The worst part is people who deal with cystic acne know all too well that pimples can be painful, but a pimple in your ear can hurt a lot. So, why exactly does acne form in your ear, specifically? And more importantly, how can you get rid of it ASAP?

Before you start trying to pop it, experts explain how to deal with an ear pimple and find relief, fast.

First, what causes a pimple in your ear?

Ear pimples can come in all shapes and sizes. You may be dealing with tiny blackheads, whiteheads, or red and tender bumps. Either way, don't freak out too much. A pimple inside your ear is usually not a sign of improper cleanliness or anything dangerous, explains Susan Bard, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Manhattan Dermatology Specialists.

"It usually starts with a clogged pore and it's not uncommon to have that in the bowl of the ear," she says. This is known as the conchal bowl, or the round and hollow part that leads to your ear canal.

Something as basic as oily skin can lead to a pimple in your ear. "The accumulation of oil, dead skin, and residue from the hair and hair products that build up and are not properly cleaned can contribute to clogged pores and blackheads," says Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D., board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology.

If you're predisposed to certain conditions like dandruff—which can also occur behind the bowl of the ear in addition to your scalp—it can cause flaking and lead to clogged pores, Dr. Bard says.

Why are pimples in the ear so painful?

If you've had an ear pimple before, then you know how uncomfortable they can be—but they're rarely dangerous when allowed to heal properly. The pimple is not likely to cause an ear infection and the pus is not going to sneakily make its way down into your ear drum.

"[Ear pimples] are very painful because the skin is more taut there, and more importantly there's cartilage there," Dr. Bard says. "Any time there's inflammation around cartilage, such as around the nose or the ear, it's always very painful."

How to prevent pimples in the ear

If the problem stems from clogged pores, how do you prevent that from happening in your ears, you might wonder? Dr. Garshick recommends regularly cleaning ears and using products that are non-comedogenic. That doesn't mean using a Q-tip, though. Rather, Mayo Clinic recommends ditching the Q-tips and applying drops of baby oil or mineral oil into the ear to soften the wax. The next day, perform an at-home ear irrigation with a bulb syringe to flush ear wax with warm water. Let the water drain out after, then dry your ear with a clean cloth.

You can even go to a doctor who will use medical tools to clear any blockage and excess wax. If properly cleaning your ears doesn't stop pimples from forming, Dr. Garshick advises washing your hair regularly to prevent the transfer of oils.

Oils and dead skin are two of the main contributors to clogged pores, so keeping your hair and face clean can help prevent pimples on your face and scalp—and in your ears. "Gentle exfoliation using a salicylic acid-containing product one to two times per week can help to prevent dead skin buildup though it's important to avoid getting it inside the ear canal," Dr. Garshick says.

How to get rid of a pimple in your ear

The best thing you can do is take a hands-off approach. Just leave it alone, says Dr. Bard.

However, she also admits that nine out of 10 of her patients don't follow that recommendation. So if the pimple is truly painful and has come to a very obvious head (say, it's very white in the center), you can use two Q-tips to pop it, says Dr. Bard, to ensure that the process is sanitary. Only target areas you can actually see—anything deep inside your ear shouldn't be touched by anyone but your dermatologist.

Avoid using your hands if you can. When people use their fingers, they tend to apply more force, says Dr. Bard. Plus, your nail can cause more trauma to the ear and dig bacteria deeper into your skin if you haven't washed your hands properly. This can increase your risk of infection.

If the pimple isn't at a head, but you're in desperate need of immediate relief, Dr. Bard recommends using warm compresses or acne spot treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, since they fight acne-causing bacteria. Retinoid based products, like Differin Adapalene Gel Acne Treatment, can also help speed the healing process, she says. But use caution when applying these to the ear area.

If you have facial acne and already have a salicylic acid treatment at home, you can try that as well, but it's not as effective and tends to be milder. However, the skin in the ear is more sensitive than that on the face and body, so Dr. Garshick cautions patients against overdoing it with creams and ointments. "Topical acne medications can be used to address breakouts in the ears, but it's important to know that the skin around the ears is delicate and may be more susceptible to irritation and sensitivity, so any product should be used with caution and in limited amounts," Dr. Garshick says. "This includes products containing retinoids, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide."

How long does it take for a pimple in your ear to go away?

In general, Dr. Garshick says it can take anywhere from days to weeks for a pimple in your ear to go away, which is similar to acne on any part of your body or face. However, the number of days or weeks it takes for that pesky ear pimple to heal is not a one-size-fits-all answer. Some types of pimples, like whiteheads, can take up to a week to go away, while nodular acne can take weeks or months. Blackheads typically don't go away on their own, but they are stubborn and can last for one to three months.

Just remember, pimples will last longer or leave scars if you try to pop them without using proper precautions (like cleaning hands before touching the area). You raise the risk of pushing bacteria deeper into the pores, which can lead to the formation of new pimples or an infection. Let it heal on its own or try the treatment options discussed above, and you'll be free of that pimple in no time.

And if the pimple hurts too much and you're afraid of making it worse, check in with your dermatologist who can offer a prescribed medication, like a cortisone injection, for especially angry zits.

  • Understanding Yeast Ear Infections in Dogs

Yeast ear infections can be quite a nuisance for our furry friends. Understanding what causes these infections and how to prevent them is essential for the well-being of yeasty dogs. Let's delve into the common factors that contribute to yeast overgrowth in a dog's ears and explore why a balanced diet plays a crucial role in preventing and managing yeast ear infections.

Yeast infections, also known as yeast dermatitis, occur when there is an overgrowth of yeast on a dog's skin or in its ears. The most common culprit behind these infections is the fungus called Malassezia pachydermatis. This fungus naturally resides on a dog's skin but can multiply rapidly under certain conditions, leading to infection.

Several factors contribute to yeast overgrowth in a dog's ears. One primary cause is moisture buildup, which creates an ideal environment for yeast growth. Dogs with floppy ears or those that frequently swim are more prone to developing ear infections due to increased moisture trapped within the ear canal.

Another factor that contributes to yeast issues is allergies. Just like humans, dogs can have allergies too, and they often manifest as itchy skin or ears. Allergies lead to inflammation, which weakens the skin barrier and makes it easier for yeast to take hold and thrive.

A poor diet lacking essential nutrients can also contribute to yeast overgrowth. A balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and limited carbohydrates helps support your dog's immune system and maintain healthy skin barriers—essential defenses against yeast production.

Addressing underlying health issues is vital in preventing recurring yeast ear infections. If your dog has an underlying condition such as hypothyroidism or immune system disorders, it may be more susceptible to these infections.

Symptoms of Yeast Ear Infections in Dogs

Recognizing the telltale signs of a yeast ear infection in your furry friend is crucial to their well-being. These infections can cause discomfort and pain for your canine companion, so it's important to be aware of the symptoms that may indicate yeast overgrowth in their ears.

One common symptom of a yeast ear infection is an infected ear that emits a foul odor. If you notice an unpleasant smell coming from your dog's ear, it could be a sign of an underlying issue. Dogs with floppy ears are more prone to developing these infections since their ear canals provide a warm and moist environment that promotes the growth of yeast.

Another symptom to watch out for is excessive itching or scratching around the ears. If you observe your dog constantly pawing at its ears or rubbing them against furniture or the floor, it may be a clear indication of discomfort caused by a yeast infection. Pay attention if they seem particularly bothered by one specific ear as this could signify an infection localized to that area.

Redness and inflammation are also common symptoms associated with yeast ear infections. Take a closer look at your dog's ears and check for any signs of irritation such as redness, swelling, or tenderness. You might even notice discharge or crusty debris accumulating inside the ear canal.

In some cases, dogs suffering from these infections may experience balance issues or exhibit unusual behavior like head shaking or tilting. This could indicate that the infection has spread deeper into the inner ear, affecting their equilibrium.

If left untreated, yeast ear infections can lead to more serious complications such as secondary bacterial infections or even permanent damage to the eardrum. That's why it's crucial to identify and address these symptoms promptly.

Key Nutrients in Dog Food for Yeast Ear Infections

It is essential to provide them with the right nutrients. Let's explore the key nutrients that should be present in dog food to promote optimal ear health and alleviate yeast infections.

    Essential Nutrients for Healthy Ears

To maintain healthy ears, dogs need a balanced diet that includes specific vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients play a vital role in supporting the immune system and preventing yeast overgrowth. Here are some of the essential nutrients to look for in dog food:

  • Vitamin A: This vitamin helps maintain the integrity of skin cells lining the ears, reducing the risk of infection.

  • Vitamin E: Known for its antioxidant properties, vitamin E protects against oxidative damage and supports overall ear health.

  • Zinc: An important mineral for immune function, zinc helps strengthen the skin barrier and aids in wound healing.

  • Selenium: This mineral acts as an antioxidant and plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy immune response.

  • Copper: Copper promotes collagen production, which is essential for maintaining healthy tissues within the ears.

  • Omega Fatty Acids for Inflammation Reduction

Yeast overgrowth often leads to inflammation in the ears, causing discomfort for our furry friends. Omega fatty acids can help reduce this inflammation by modulating the body's inflammatory response. Look for dog foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil or flaxseed oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease inflammation associated with yeast infections while also promoting overall skin health.
