Doctors Locate Splinter Lodged In Man's Eye 15 Years Later: 'Remarkable'

An opthalmologist performing a routine checkup made an eye-opening discovery.

An unidentified man in his 30s, believed to be from Boston, is said to have been living with a 3 millimeter wooden splinter lodged in his eye for more than 15 years, according to a study conducted at  Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan.

Doctors from Harvard Medical School and Wayne State University in Detroit shared photos of the man's eye with BMJ Case reports.

The man was having his eyes checked because he is diabetic. People with diabetes can get a group of eye problems called diabetic eye disease and potentially blindness.

These issues include glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy.

Doctors said the splinter (pictured) was in his eye for 15 years. BMJ Case Reports 2023 The man recalled being in terrible pain while he was gardening 15 years ago, but his pain eventually went away. BMJ Case Reports 2023

Doctors didn't initially see anything wrong with the patient's peepers, though they eventually noticed a foreign body in his cornea, the eye's outermost layer.

The man said that he suffered from an extremely painful "penetrating injury" while gardening 15 years ago, but stopped thinking about it because his symptoms disappeared," the Daily Mail reported.

"The patient had a history of a penetrating eye injury sustained while gardening 15 years ago," a report stated.

"At the time of the injury, the patient reported experiencing immediate pain and discomfort but decided not to seek medical attention as the symptoms seemed to resolve over time. No further ophthalmic evaluation or treatment was pursued, and the patient's vision appeared stable over the years," they added.

They called the case "remarkable" and said that most foreign bodies are detected in the eye soon after injury.

Doctors said the man is lucky the splinter didn't perforate his cornea. BMJ Case Reports 2023

"Most cases are detected and managed promptly after the injury, as they often cause significant pain, redness and tearing, and serve as a nidus for infection," said the team of doctors.

"However, in some instances, the foreign body may be asymptomatic and can remain undetected for an extended period," they continued.

Doctors said they didn't remove the splinter, which luckily had not perforated the patient's cornea — which could cause blindness.

They told the man to go about his normal life and return to the doctor if he had any pain or vision problems.

"The foreign body was not removed as it is deeply situated in the cornea, reaching to the anterior chamber," Dr. Asmaa Zidan from Schepens Eye Research Institute and Harvard University told The Post.

"Nonetheless, a close follow-up has been recommended, with the patient advised to return if new symptoms manifest," the doctor added.

Dr.Zidan said this patient is an "exception" and anyone who suspects an ocular injury should seek help.

"The delayed detection of the foreign body might be attributed to the patient's lack of medical attention at the time of the injury. Despite initial discomfort, the patient refrained from seeking medical assistance," Zidan said.

"It is crucial to underscore that this case is an exception, and individuals with splinters should promptly seek medical attention to mitigate the potential risks, such as fungal infections. The standard of care dictates the immediate removal of foreign bodies whenever feasible," Zidan added.

Now Essex businessman JJ Slater, 31, has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, according to MailOnline.

He was told how his body had "deteriorated" and that his "life would never be the same" due to the condition.

JJ's weight dropped from 13.3 stone to 12 stone ahead of his medical emergency.

He told the publication of his symptoms and said: "I was waking up four to five times needing the toilet.

"Then I started to lose weight quite quickly. I lost about a stone and a half in three weeks, but I was still eating the same and going to the gym every day."

He added: "I hadn't changed anything, but my body was deteriorating so I knew something was wrong.

"I was getting lightheaded often, I was on the sofa watching TV and then stood up and fell to the floor… so, I knew something wasn't right.

"I had a blood test and my doctor said I probably wouldn't hear anything until after Christmas, but I woke up the following morning to three missed calls from 111 and voicemails saying 'as soon as you wake up, go to hospital' … I have never woken up so quickly.

"I panicked thinking it was the worst news."

The reality TV star - who initially married Bianca Petronzi, 29, but later returned to the experiment with Ella Morgan, 30 - found that his blood sugar had plummeted to dangerously high levels.

This sparked the potential for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) - when the body enters ketosis.

When there isn't enough glucose in the body to burn for energy, the body uses fat instead and this produces a type of chemical called ketones.

According to the NHS, a sweet-smelling breath can indicate the presence of the condition.

Previously the clothes designer shared a snap on his Instagram of him lying in a hospital bed with heart monitors strapped to his chest.

JJ captioned the shot, which was shared to his stories, "Happy Wednesday" followed by a heart hands and crying emojs.

He added beneath with an asterisk: "I'm doing ok btw".

At the time, a rep for JJ told The Sun: "He fell ill and was taken to hospital and they are running tests which is all we know at this stage."

Meanwhile, The Sun previously exclusively reported how fashion designer JJ was in talks to join TOWIE.

JJ certainly has the makings of a lavish screen star, with his jet-setting lifestyle and posh nights out.

A source was first to tell us: "JJ has made quite the impact on Married At First Sight, thanks to all the headlines generated by him 'wife swapping' with Ella, and he's caught the eye of Towie bosses.

"They think he would be a perfect fit for their show - he's from Essex, he looks good and having starred on MAFS, clearly knows how to bring drama."
